How to use the GSTIN Validator
- Type or paste the GSTIN.
- Read the result. If it's valid, confirm the registration on the GST portal before relying on it.
What each part of a GSTIN means
| Characters | Meaning | Example (07ABCDE1234F1Z2) |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | State or UT code | 07 = Delhi |
| 3–12 | PAN of the business | ABCDE1234F |
| 13 | Registration number under that PAN in the state (1–9, then A–Z) | 1 |
| 14 | “Z” by default | Z |
| 15 | Check character calculated from the first 14 | 2 |
The 4th character of the PAN shows the type of holder — for example P for an individual, C for a company, F for a firm or LLP.
Format check vs registration check
A GSTIN can be correctly formed but cancelled, suspended or belong to a different business. For input tax credit and compliance, always verify it with the Search Taxpayer facility on the official GST portal.
Worked example
07ABCDE1234F1Z2 (a made-up sample)
- State code 07 → Delhi
- PAN ABCDE1234F; 4th letter D → no standard holder type mapped
- Check digit computed from the first 14 characters = 2 ✓
Valid format
Important notes
- Nothing you enter is sent anywhere — the check runs on your device.
Frequently asked questions
Does a valid result mean the business is registered?
No. It only means the number is well-formed. Check the registration status on the GST portal.
How is the GSTIN check digit calculated?
Each of the first 14 characters is converted to a number (0–9, A=10 … Z=35), alternately multiplied by 1 and 2, reduced modulo 36 and summed. The check character is the value that brings the total to a multiple of 36.
