Margin vs markup — the mistake that costs sellers money
Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. Adding 30% to your cost gives a 30% markup but only a 23.08% margin. If your target is a 30% margin, you need a 42.86% markup. Use the Profit Margin Calculator and Markup Calculator to convert between them.

Frequently asked questions
Should I calculate profit before or after GST?
For most GST-registered businesses, calculate profit on prices excluding GST. GST you collect is owed to the government and the input tax credit you claim offsets the GST you paid, so neither is your income or your cost.
