How to use the Freight Calculator
- Choose how the transporter quoted: per km, per tonne, per tonne-km or a fixed trip price.
- Enter the rate, distance and load weight.
- Add loading/unloading, tolls, other charges and GST if charged.
Formula
Base freight = Rate × km, Rate × tonnes, or Rate × tonnes × km
Total = (Base + Loading + Tolls + Other) × (1 + GST ÷ 100)
Comparing different quote types
A full-truck-load (FTL) price is often quoted per km or as a fixed trip price; part loads are often per tonne or per kg. Converting every quote into cost per tonne (for your load) is the fairest way to compare them.
Note
Worked example
8 tonnes over 450 km at ₹42/km, ₹1,500 loading, ₹2,200 tolls
- Base = 42 × 450 = ₹18,900
- Total = 18,900 + 1,500 + 2,200 = ₹22,600
- Per tonne = 22,600 ÷ 8 = ₹2,825
₹22,600 (₹50.22/km, ₹2,825/tonne)
Frequently asked questions
What is per tonne-km pricing?
The rate is multiplied by both weight and distance. 10 tonnes over 300 km at ₹3.50 per tonne-km costs ₹10,500.
Do I pay for the empty return trip?
Per-km FTL quotes may assume a return load; if not, transporters may price one-way trips higher. Ask how the quote was built.
